About
Somali Gender Equity Movement (SGEM) is a non-partisan, socio-economic, and political global movement that started organically on social media after Zainab M. Hassan, Founder and current Executive Director, initiated a Facebook dialogue on Vision 2016 for the Somali Women platform on April 5, 2015, in response to the glaring absence of Somali women’s voices in critical debates about the future of Somalia. From this conversation, ten women’s rights activists came together to co-create SGEM through strategic planning and collective visioning. This timely initiative addressed the urgent need for gender equity and inclusion in Somalia and was officially launched in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, on June 13, 2015. Since then, SGEM has galvanized the support of nearly 8,000 diverse Somali women within Somalia and across the diaspora to advocate for gender equity, with its headquarters based in Mogadishu, Somalia.
